After facing defeat at the hands of Nationalist Congress Party’s Gilbert Mendonca in 2009 polls, Mehta had bounced back with an impressive victory in the 2014 elections. He had won by 91,468 votes.
In 2016, Mehta was acquitted of corruption charges by a court after the prosecution failed to produce evidence beyond reasonable doubt in court.
In February 2017, he was booked along with 200 other people for rioting in Thane.
Earlier this month, the Mira Road police filed a case against Mehta for alleged CRZ violations in his 'ultra luxury' Seven Eleven Club.
Apart from politics, Mehta owns several businesses in health, construction and education sectors. He is also the owner of the Seven Eleven group.
