Driven by frustration over being rendered unemployed by the lockdown, an 18-year-old former construction site supervisor attempted to kill himself by jumping in front of a train near Dativali railway station on Tuesday.

A Central Railway (CR) officer said just as a special Kasara-Panvel train for railway workers slowed down at a curvature Dativali, Salman Anis Ahmed rushed to the tracks. The alert motorman applied the emergency brakes and stopped the train. But by then a portion of his left foot came under the wheels of the train, severing off two toes.

He was rescued, given first aid and food in the train by an RPF constable, and then sent to the hospital.

He later told railway officials that he was driven over the edge by unemployment. He said he hails from Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh but had moved to Mumbai some time ago. He found a home in Mumbra and did odd jobs to get by.

He last worked with a construction site, where all work came to a halt after the nationwide lockdown came into effect on March 25. Since passenger trains were cancelled three days prior, Ahmed said he was left stranded in Mumbra, with no means to pay rent or buy food. “He said he desperately wanted to return home to Bijnor,” said the CR officer.

On Wednesday, Ahmed was discharged from the hospital and sent in the care of a distant relative.
